Bubble (or ice water) hash is made by using extremely cold water and gentle agitation to isolate trichome heads. A very simple process, an adaptation of sifting techniques utilizing the physical properties of trichomes; the fact that they are mostly round, and also the density of trichomes which cause them to sink in water. A very simple method of creating such a product basically requires bags with graduating screens of nylon mesh, all placed into a vessel like a bucket or trash can, filled with ice water. Then cannabis flowers or trim are placed into the top and stirred, causing the stalks of the trichomes to freeze and become brittle, allowing the trichome heads to break off, and sink through different sized holes in the mesh bags, essentially isolating particles and differentiating them by size. Every cultivar/strain/batch has a different average size for the biggest, most potent trichomes, so this method requires great care and customization in order to make a top quality product. These types of extracts are generally our least perishable, and require the least amount of care when storing, unless they are extremely pure, in which case they will degrade at room temperature rapidly. They would like to be refrigerated, but the quality of the product will degrade more slowly than other forms, or at least less noticeably. Generally these extracts are much less stick or runny, so it usually isn't essential to keep the containers upright, although it is still preferred. These are forms like fresh frozen or live water hash, which are probably the most perishable form of extract.
